Intestinal Permeability Assessment – At-Home Urine Test by Genova Diagnostics
Gain objective insight into your intestinal barrier function with the Genova Diagnostics Intestinal Permeability Assessment — a non-invasive, at-home urine test that evaluates small intestinal absorption and gut permeability, commonly referred to as "leaky gut."
What This Test Measures
After drinking a provided lactulose/mannitol solution, your urine sample is analyzed for three key markers:
- Lactulose Percent Recovery – A larger sugar molecule; elevated recovery may indicate increased intestinal permeability.
- Mannitol Percent Recovery – A smaller molecule that reflects intestinal absorption capacity.
- Lactulose/Mannitol Ratio – The primary indicator of intestinal permeability. An elevated ratio may suggest increased gut permeability ("leaky gut").
Who May Benefit From This Test
This assessment may be useful for individuals and practitioners seeking to evaluate:
- Persistent or unexplained gastrointestinal concerns
- Suspected increased intestinal permeability
- Concerns about intestinal absorption
- Food-related digestive issues
- Intestinal barrier function as part of a broader GI health evaluation
Results should be interpreted alongside your health history, symptoms, and other relevant clinical information.

Frequently Asked Questions
What sample type is required?
This is an at-home urine test. You drink the provided solution and collect urine per the kit instructions.
Is this a test for "leaky gut"?
"Leaky gut" is a common term for increased intestinal permeability. This test evaluates permeability via differential absorption of lactulose and mannitol. It is not intended to diagnose a medical condition on its own.
How long do results take?
Most reports are available 7–17 days after the specimen is received by the laboratory.
Do I need to stop medications or supplements?
Certain products may affect results. Follow kit preparation instructions and consult your healthcare provider before changing or discontinuing any prescribed medications.
Can I order if I live in New York or New Jersey?
No — this test is not currently available for purchase by NY or NJ residents through Evenbetternow.
