⚠️ IMPORTANT: Never discontinue prescription medications without first consulting your physician.
Common GI-MAP Preparation Guidelines
Antibiotics
Ideally wait 30–60 days after completing antibiotics before collecting a sample to allow the microbiome to stabilize.
Antimicrobial Supplements & Antifungals
For the most accurate baseline GI-MAP results, antimicrobial supplements and antifungal products should be stopped for 6–8 weeks (1.5–2 months) before collecting your test sample. Testing sooner may affect the microbial findings and may not accurately reflect your baseline gut environment.
Examples may include oregano oil, berberine, Biocidin®, parasite protocols, herbal antimicrobials, and other products intended to reduce bacteria, yeast, parasites, or other microbes.
Probiotics
Many practitioners recommend discontinuing probiotics approximately 2 weeks before testing when the goal is to evaluate the natural state of the microbiome.
PPIs & Antacids
These can affect certain GI-MAP markers, and are often recommended to be discontinued prior to testing when medically appropriate and approved by your physician.
Digestive Enzymes & Digestive Aids
Recommendations can vary depending on whether you are trying to establish a baseline or evaluate how your digestive system is functioning while on your current regimen. In many cases, practitioners recommend continuing long-term digestive support products and simply noting them on the requisition paperwork.
